Waze Carpool Goes Live Today For Hurricane Harvey Rides
NEW ORLEANS – Waze Carpool will be launching a free service in New Orleans, empowering local drivers to offer free rides to neighbors in need.
Carpool goes live today, Thursday, Sept. 7, and Wazers will be able to use the service in Houston, Corpus Christi and Beaumont, Texas, and Lake Charles, Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana, and surrounding areas that have been affected by Hurricane Harvey.
Waze Carpool is a popular service previously limited to California that connects everyday commuters and riders to travel together on the most optimal routes. Waze drivers are not professional drivers. Any citizen can offer a ride. The service is reliant on a critical mass of riders and drivers so the more people who sign up, the greater chance there is of finding a ride.
As a community-first organization, Waze reps said they feel it is their responsibility to do what they can to help local residents get back on their feet and create new routines to home and work in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. Company reps said they rushed development of this completely free version of Waze Carpool to help those communities travel in and out of affected areas more conveniently and safely.
