Home Practice Image 2xNEW ORLEANS – Southern Orthopaedic Specialists recently welcomed orthopaedic surgeons Jourdan M. Cancienne and Ryan J. Charles as well as physiatrist Jonathan Finney to its growing team of medical specialists. These physicians are providing patients with individualized care through both surgical and nonsurgical treatment options using state-of-the-art techniques. All three are serving patients in Southern Orthopaedic’s New Orleans and Metairie clinics, as well as their newly opened Slidell location.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Cancienne, Dr. Charles and Dr. Finney join our team of physicians,” said Andrew Todd, board certified orthopaedic surgeon at Southern Orthopaedic Specialists. “Their unique and wide range of specialties brings a new level of orthopaedic care for our patients to help them recover safely and quickly so they can regain independence and return to their normal, active daily routines.”

Cancienne is a fellowship-trained shoulder, knee, hip and sports medicine specialist. His practice incorporates patient-centered approaches with the latest surgical and non-surgical strategies to return patients to their desired activity levels, regardless of their level of participation. He specializes in minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques for rotator cuff injuries, shoulder instability, ligamentous and cartilage knee injuries, as well as femoroacetabular impingement of the hip – a common cause of hip pain in younger, more active adults. He also specializes in revision surgery, including anatomic and reverse shoulder replacement, cartilage restoration/transplantation and multiligament knee reconstruction. A native of Baton Rouge, Cancienne received his undergraduate degree from Tufts University, then returned home to Louisiana to study at Tulane University School of Medicine before completing his orthopaedic surgery training at the University of Virginia.

Charles specializes in total hip and total knee replacement. He is trained in the latest techniques and technologies such as robotics and a modern minimally invasive direct superior approach to the hip, while employing techniques that allow patients to recover faster, and with less pain, than patients undergoing traditional hip and knee replacements. Charles received a Bachelor of Arts undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Virginia and a master’s degree in biophysics and physiology at Georgetown University. He obtained his medical degree at Tulane University School of Medicine and completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Michigan Health System, where he was a chief resident and received multiple awards for his dedication to resident education. He then became an associate staff physician at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation where he completed his fellowship in primary and complex hip and knee arthroplasty.

Finney specializes in the treatment of spinal pain through the use of interventional and multidisciplinary modalities without the use of opioid medication. He has expertise in treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system, with the goal of restoring the function and quality of life in his patients. A native New Orleanian, Finney completed medical school at Louisiana State University School of Medicine, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society as well as the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He received his training in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and was elected administrative chief resident. He subsequently completed a fellowship in pain medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
