Six Jefferson Parish Schools to Benefit from $2.3-Million Grant Announced

 

NEW ORLEANS – Jefferson Parish Public Schools superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley and Young Audiences Arts for Learning (Young Audiences of Louisiana’s parent organization) executive director David Dik announced in a press release that six Jefferson Parish public PreK-5 grade schools are taking part in a new 4-year, $2.3 million grant awarded toYoung Audiences of Louisiana (YALA) to create an arts-integrated educational model that advances student achievement.

The six schools to benefit from the grant will be: Clancy-Maggiore Elementary School for the Arts, Lincoln Elementary School for the

Arts, Bonella A. St. Ville Elementary School, John J. Audubon Elementary School, G.T. Woods Elementary School and Vic A. Pitre Elementary School. The initiative will directly serve 2,620 elementary students, 211 classroom teachers, six teaching artists, and 18 school leaders across these six sites.

“We are so thrilled to be a part of this partnership with Jefferson Parish Schools and are thankful to the Department of Education for this grant,” said Marguerite Moisio, YALA board president.  “We know that students at schools with an arts-integrated curriculum perform better and develop an intense love of learning, so we are thankful for the opportunity to help implement it in more schools.”

Representatives from JPPSS, YALA and participating schools gathered at Lincoln Elementary School for the Arts in Marrero to announce the schools and witness Kindergarten and 1st graders joyfully learn literacy skills through the arts.

“Not only are the arts foundational to our region’s culture and history, but they have an immense impact on a child’s education,” said Brumley. “This grant and our partnership with Young Audiences will help inspire the next generation of artists and improve academic outcomes for thousands of kids.”

Additionally, the project will deliver national access to model curriculum and materials through a distance-learning platform administered by Young Audiences Arts for Learning. Research from the JPPSS partnership will help elevate the effectiveness of arts integration in improving student academic and artistic outcomes, said Moisio.  

Young Audiences of Louisiana (YALA) is partnering with Jefferson Parish Public School System with funding through the United States Department of Education’s (DOE) Assistance for Arts Education Development and Dissemination Grants Competition (AAEDD).
