NEW ORLEANS – The St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce and St. Bernard Tourist Commission will kick off their 2nd annual Shop Small Week in St. Bernard Parish on Saturday, Nov. 24, at Café Aquarius (2101 Paris Road, Chalmette.)

St. Bernard Economic Development Foundation (SBEDF) has also announced the return of the St. Bernard Shop Small Passport, a shopper incentive program that encourages shoppers to keep it local this holiday season.

“This year we are anticipating hundreds of shoppers will be participating in the St. Bernard Shop Small Passport program," said Danielle Martin, brand management and community relations associate at SBEDF. "Shop Small Week provides quite a significant bump in holiday traffic for our small businesses.  The business owners love having new customers in their stores, and the shoppers are excited to get their passport stamped."

In an effort to support local shops that make our communities strong, in 2010, American Express launched Small Business Saturday on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to encourage people to Shop Small and bring more holiday shopping to small businesses. Since Small Business Saturday started, U.S. customers have reported spending an estimated total of $85 billion at independent retailers and restaurants —that's $85 billion over 8 days alone.

More than 30 St. Bernard Parish-based businesses will participate.

“We are excited to be participating in Shop Small Week once again this year," said Wendy Haines, the owner of The Cottage Store in Arabi (6707 St. Claude Ave.). "The holiday season can get off to a slow start with many shoppers going to big box stores or shopping online. Shop Small Week reminds shoppers to think about our local businesses before they’ve purchased all of their holiday gifts.”

“Our customers make the holiday season so rewarding," Hained added. "You can tell they've put a lot of thought into who they are shopping for; they want to give their loved one something special that they can’t get anywhere else. It’s a unique shopping experience that can only be found at a local shop.”

To participate, pick up your St. Bernard Shop Small Passport at any of the participating locations, or during the Small Business Saturday Kickoff at Café Aquarius; get your passport stamped by making a purchase at five or more locations; and return your completed passport to Brewster’s Restaurant & Lounge (8751 West Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette), no later than Saturday, Dec. 1, to be entered into the drawing for prize winners. Limit one stamp per location.

Winners will be announced and contacted on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

“The holiday season is a critical time for small businesses, especially retailers," said Martin. "Shop Small Week in St. Bernard Parish reminds our citizens that when they shop locally, they are not only getting a unique gift, but they are also helping small business owners and their employees support their families.”

Participating businesses are listed in the flier below.
