Second Phase Of Delgado Sidney Collier Site Now Complete, New Programs Set To Begin
NEW ORLEANS – Construction is now complete at the Delgado Sidney Collier site at 3727 Louisa St. in New Orleans. The facility had been under construction in two phases since May 2013. Many of the programs offered by Delgado at the new location have never been available to residents in that part of the city and region.
The new Delgado location is in the Desire-Florida area of New Orleans, between Gentilly and the Ninth Ward. The Delgado Sidney Collier site replaces the former Louisiana Technical College Sidney Collier campus that was devastated by floodwaters during Hurricane Katrina and subsequently demolished.
The hurricane-damaged Sidney Collier campus became part of Delgado in April 2010, when Louisiana Technical College Region One merged with Delgado. Before Hurricane Katrina, Sidney Collier’s enrollment approached 1,000 students, the highest of all Region One campuses.
Funds to build the new Delgado Sidney Collier site total $21 million, with $12 million provided through the State of Louisiana and $9 million through FEMA. Construction of the state-funded first phase of the project was completed in time for the grand opening on August 29, 2014. Construction of the federally financed second phase has concluded in time for the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in August 2015.
While offering unique educational opportunities to the entire region, Delgado’s Sidney Collier site is helping to revitalize the Desire-Florida neighborhood by serving as a pathway for residents to obtain job skills and employment. The school’s curriculum is aligned with community needs and interests, and the campus is expected to function as a community center and to be a focus of community pride.
The Delgado Sidney Collier site features two brick, two-story structures linked by a colonnaded main entrance facing the corner of Louisa Street and Higgins Boulevard. The state-funded part of the site includes 36,000 square feet of space for classrooms, laboratories, workshops, offices and support functions such as information technology. The federally funded part opening this month offers an additional 25,000 square feet dedicated to student services, including a library and student government offices, as well as an Answer Center, testing and tutoring center, student lounge and game room. The site’s design includes a courtyard and has approximately 100,000 square feet of landscaped grounds and parking.
The new Delgado Sidney Collier site offers courses leading to the associate’s degree and transfer to four-year institutions, certificates of technical study, technical diplomas, as well as non-credit courses including English as a second language instruction and high school equivalency diploma preparation.
In Fall 2014, Delgado Sidney Collier began offering the following for-credit programs: Associate of Arts Transfer Degree; Associate of General Studies; Associate of Science Transfer Degree; Technical Diplomas in HVAC/R, Barber-Styling, Cosmetology and Practical Nursing; Certificates of Technical Studies in HVAC/R, Carpentry, Electrician-Commercial, Electrician-Residential, Electrician-Small Industrial and General Studies.
New for Fall 2015 at Delgado Sidney Collier are the Art of Construction programs, which include Architectural/ Design Construction Technology, Civil and Construction Applied Engineering Technology, and Computer Aided Design and Drafting. These programs have previously been located at the Delgado City Park Campus, and they are among the college’s most in-demand offerings because they lead to high-paying careers in fast-growth industries.
The opening of the Delgado Sidney Collier location brings new opportunities to students at nearby high schools. Students will be able to take advantage of dual enrollment at Delgado, enabling them to broaden their educational experiences and earn credits toward career credentials faster.
Delgado Community College now offers instruction at nine locations around the New Orleans region: Delgado City Park Campus, Delgado West Bank Campus, Delgado Charity School of Nursing, Delgado Sidney Collier, Delgado at UNO, and the Delgado Maritime, Fire and Industrial Training Facility (all in New Orleans); Delgado Northshore (Slidell); Delgado Jefferson (Metairie); and the Jefferson Business and Career Solutions Center (Gretna).
Established in 1921, Delgado is recognized as Louisiana’s oldest and largest community college, serving individuals of all ages who reflect the diversity of the New Orleans metropolitan area.
