Oyster Season Delayed In Some Public Seed Grounds

BATON ROUGE (AP) — The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is delaying the oyster season in part of the public seed grounds to protect recently settled tiny oysters called "spat."

The area is east of the Mississippi River and north of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, including Lake Borgne and Mississippi Sound.

The season was originally scheduled to open there Oct. 20. But the department says spatfall has remained below normal in the area, where oyster stocks have been low for the last several years.
