New Same-Day Delivery Service Heads To The Big Easy

Instacart's online grocery service sets sights on the greater New Orleans area

NEW ORLEANS – Starting March 8, Instacart, called "one of the most prominent unicorn companies in tech" by CNBC, will bring its grocery delivery service to New Orleans.

Instacart gives customers the option to shop online with some of their favorite or local stores and have their items delivered the same day. At a time when Amazon (offering free Prime Pantry to any Prime customer) and Whole Foods are positioned to dominate the online grocery market, Instacart is considered a win for big chain and local grocery stores.

After claiming an overwhelming volume of requests for the area, Instacart's leadership decided to expand to the region servicing 108 zip codes around the area.

“We work with a variety of local retailers to provide the freshest, highest quality groceries to our customers. Launching in New Orleans gives us an opportunity to expand service in the Louisiana market," said David Holyoak, general manager, in a release about the expansion.

The company says customers can go to the website, or mobile app, select their city or store, add items to their "cart," choose a delivery window anywhere from one hour up to five days and check out.

In New Orleans, Instacart will offer items from Rouses, Petco and Costco, with orders over $35 charging only a $5.99 delivery fee (delivery fees are decided by the size of the order and time chosen for delivery). Customers have the option to opt in to a monthly Instacart Express membership, which amounts to $14.99 a month or $149 for the year and offers free same-day delivery for orders over $35.
