Owner/Accountant, Work – A Business Resource
Melissa Thies

Q: How would you describe your business?

I add value to my client’s businesses with outsourced accounting and consulting to streamline processes.

Q: When did you launch?

2017

Q: How were you inspired to start your business?

I saw an opportunity to provide customer service in an industry not well known for being driven by relationships.  I want to be different.

Q: What were the biggest obstacles and how were they overcome?

I am not a great public speaker.  I am much better in small groups.  I am still working on it, but I realize that speaking in public is so important to educate small businesses about how they can become stronger and more efficient.

Q: What is your big focus right now?

My focus right now is making sure that my clients get to available resources for small businesses during the pandemic so that they are setting themselves up to thrive when we get to the other side of this.

Q: What is the best advice you ever received?

You will learn more from your failures than your successes.

Q: What success have you had in the last year?

I am about to celebrate my 5th wedding anniversary.  Each year I grow closer to my husband and step children.  I would have to say I hope that they feel that I have become a good wife and step mom and have made a house our home.

Q: What has been the biggest benefit of being a POWER member?

I get to network and learn from some of the most talented, intelligent and compassionate people.  It isn’t just women.  The men that are involved and support this group are unique and very special.

Q: What does POWER mean to you?

I have answered this question many times by saying that power gives me the opportunity to help others.  However, recently I was in a zoom meeting and someone answered that power means “responsibility”.  That spoke to me and I realize that it is true that “to whom much is given that much is expected”.

Q: What is one professional and one personal takeaway from this pandemic?

Professionally, the takeaway has been to remain calm because I can’t help anyone if I am anxious.  Personally, I have learned to create more balance between my professional and personal life.

Q: What are you currently doing to stay positive given the recent pandemic?

Be thankful for everything!
