Massive Bra Displayed Outside Windsor Court for BRA Day

NEW ORLEANS — It’s a HUGE show of support. The team of breast surgeons at Omega Hospital show their support for breast cancer survivors by hanging a 25-foot wide, 300-pound pink bra on the outside of the Windsor Court Hotel. The massive pink bra was constructed by artist Jonathan Bertuccelli of Studio3, inc. The bra will serve as a very large visual reminder of the struggles breast cancer survivors endure, and will create awareness in a big way. The bra was unveiled Wednesday, Oct. 15, which is National BRA Day (Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day), as a tribute to New Orleans area breast cancer survivors.

The bra will hang outside the Windsor Court until Monday, Oct. 20 and will serves as a warm welcome to the hundreds of breast cancer survivors who will be honored at The Pink Gala, hosted by Omega Hospital and New Orleans Living Magazine at the Windsor Court Hotel on the evening of Friday, Oct. 17.

Louisiana has one of the highest breast cancer rates in the country. Located in Metairie, Omega Hospital’s goal is to raise awareness that a staggering 70% of women who undergo breast cancer treatment are not fully informed about their options for reconstructive surgery. Omega Hospital CEO, Dr. Eric George said, "Our highly trained breast reconstruction surgeons with decades of experience, are valuable resources for women seeking the most advanced methods of breast reconstruction. We care for our patients in a very intimate setting providing the best quality care and compassion throughout a woman's breast cancer journey."

A crane hoisted the massive pink bra onto the side of the Windsor Court Hotel. The bra weighs approximately 300 pounds, and is 25 feet across, 12 feet high. It took a team of three Studio3 artists more than 160 hours to complete. It is made with a light metal tubing frame, coated with paper mache and high tech contact cement. It took about 15 gallons of coating (glue, primer and paint) to reach the hot pink color. But, the bra is also "green," made in large part with recyclable materials.
