Mandeville City Councilman Ellis: Request For A.G. Opinion On Retroactive Raises A Must

MANDEVILLE, LA – Mandeville City Councilman David Ellis joined in the unanimous passage of a resolution last night, asking the Attorney General's Office to issue an opinion on the legality of retroactive pay raises recently awarded by Mayor Donald J. Villere.

"Whether the city's chief executive can lawfully issue retroactive pay raises to department heads without Council approval is a significant question," Ellis said. "If it was legal, it shouldn't be, and I'll take steps in the next term to amend the City Charter."

Last month, the Mayor Villere gave raises to several department heads and paid them retroactively to the beginning of the year.

"Our department heads are already well compensated by the taxpayers," Ellis said, “and the timing of this decision – right after the recent election – is peculiar, if not inappropriate. I look forward to reading Attorney General Landry's response to our request."
