Local Fiber Artist, Painter Shea Celebrates New Installation At Porter Lyons Tonight
NEW ORLEANS – Porter Lyons, a local “jewelry + design + lifestyle” brand by Ashley Porter, is celebrating a new art installation by Connie Shea, a local fiber artist and painter, at an opening party tonight at 631 Toulouse St. from 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
In addition to Porter’s cultural and unique jewelry and accessories, she has incorporated art and other creative installations into her store in the French Quarter.
“In this new series of fiber off-loom pieces I am working with wool and other lightweight yarns in a simple sculptural yarn wrapping process,” Shea said. “The buoyant nature of these yarns is anchored by the density created through its form. It is a presence that whispers to be still.”
Shea is a textile artist and painter working primarily in sculptural weaving and acrylic paint whose woven works explores shape and space with wool, felt, stuffing and wire. These works influence and are influenced by her abstract paintings of fish and underwater seascapes, she said. In both mediums she speaks in related colors and forms to convey a sense of textured weight, tension and harmony.
Shea said she is inspired by the energetic paintings of the abstract expressionists and the materials and techniques introduced by the soft sculpture artists of the 1960s.
Born in Clawson, Michigan, Shea lives in New Orleans and works in the film industry and in her Bywater studio. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 2004 with a BFA focusing on sculptural weaving and abstract painting.
