International High School Of New Orleans Graduates From 13 Countries

NEW ORLEANS The International High School of New Orleans (IHSNO) will celebrate its graduation ceremony at the Mahalia Jackson Theater on Thursday, May 26, 2016, at 6:00 p.m.

         New Orleans City Councilmember LaToya Cantrell will deliver this year’s keynote address to the 87 graduating seniors. The Class of 2016 is the fourth class to graduate since the school opened its doors in 2009.

         The IHSNO Class of 2016 includes students from Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Ethiopia, France, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Vietnam and the United States. IHSNO reps said their teachers and staff nurture and educate students in a diverse learning community by offering a variety of world languages, intercultural appreciation and an International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, the only IB program in Orleans Parish.

         Angel Washington is the valedictorian of the IHSNO Class of 2016. Washington was born and raised in New Orleans by her parents Andrew and Deneen Washington. Washington is a member of the National Art Honor Society, the Beta Club, and a recent recipient of an Outstanding Youth Award and the Altar Server of the Year Award. Angel received a full scholarship to attend Xavier University in the fall where she will major in biology (pre-med).

         This year’s salutatorian is Sylvia Jones, the daughter of Robin and Warren Jones. As a high school student, Jones served the New Orleans community through the Big Class Youth Advisory Council; and she was accepted into and succeeded in the Bard Early College Program. Jones will major in marketing at Tulane University in the fall.

         Included among the various accomplishments of this year’s graduating class are: Michael Fernandez, Valeria Rodriguez and Alejandro Castellon received Hispanic Heritage Scholarships, Shane Anderson performed in a jazz ensemble with Wynton Marsalis, Hassan Simmons was a finalist in the Trust Your Crazy Idea Challenge and Galatia Jones addressed the Anti-Defamation League at its annual gala.
