Hertz Investment Group Commits $80K To NORD Foundation For Summer Aquatics

NEW ORLEANS – Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced the Hertz Investment Group is awarding $80,000 to the New Orleans Recreational Development (NORD) Foundation to support summer aquatics this year. The NORD Foundation is a nonprofit organization that raises funds to support the activities of the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC).

City officials said this donation will ensure that aquatics classes are available for all ages at every NORDC pool and taught by certified instructors.  In addition, it supports training of lifeguards and upkeep of pool equipment.

“I want to thank Judah and Astrid Hertz for their generosity and ongoing commitment to New Orleans,” Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. “They recognize that providing healthy and safe programs for our residents is an essential community function. I remember learning how to swim at NORDC pools, and this reminds me of the importance of water safety for all residents. This support will change thousands of lives and keep our community healthy and safe.”

In 2010, NORDC’s eight public pools were only open in the summertime. Today, NORDC aquatics programs are available at three year-round pools and 12 summertime pools. In 2015, nearly 4,000 youth completed the swimming and safety program and learned about safely entering a pool, moving in the water and swimming strokes last summer.  All pools are fully-accessible and staffed with professional lifeguards.

“I am very pleased to be able to make a contribution to this program which gives the residents of New Orleans the opportunity to learn water safety,” said Judah Hertz, CEO and Chairman of Hertz Investment Group. “I support this program because I feel that everybody should have the opportunity to learn how to swim. NORDC provides this great opportunity to the community and I am happy to be able to support the program.”

City officials said since Mayor Landrieu has taken office, the City has invested over $200 million in programming and state-of-the-art capital improvements for NORDC.

“On behalf of the entire NORD Commission, I underscore the significance of the exemplary partnership of private funding with public resources, to offer water safety programming to our community and to sustain the significant investments that have been made to bring access to swimming lessons to all New Orleanians, regardless of age and regardless of neighborhood,” said Judge Byron C. Williams, NORDC Commission Chair.  “Thank you to the Hertz Investment Group from NORDC.”

“We are grateful for the generosity of a new generation of corporate sponsors like Hertz Investment Group,” said Louis Lauricella, NORD Foundation Chairman.  “They truly understand the value of being a responsible and caring steward for our great city. We are changing lives and keeping our community healthy and safe at our state of the art facilities.”

“Team NORDC thanks the Hertz Investment Group for their support of summer aquatics,” said Vic Richard, CEO of NORDC. “This contribution will allow us to continue to positively impact all citizens of New Orleans, especially our youth.”

NORDC pool season started May 31.
