Who We Are

Christwood was founded in early 1990’s as a ministry of Christ Episcopal Church to care for seniors in all aspects of their lives. Residential services have expanded over the years to include 161 Independent living apartments and stand-alone cottage homes, and 34 Personal Care apartments, 30 Skill nursing suites, and 29 memory care suites.

Innovative in the senior care field by serving both residents and non-resident seniors in the Community Center, a comprehensive fitness center offering facilities and programs particularly designed to a population aged 55+. In addition to providing the latest in exercise equipment, the Community Center also houses a 25-yard heated indoor pool, an aerobics studio, a Pickle Ball court, day spa, game room, art studio, and the Forever Fit Kitchen/Café.

In furthering its mission to help seniors live with independence, Christwood launched “At Your Service”, a new program to the Northshore community that provides companion care to non-Christwood residents 55 years of age and older.

Christwood Executive Officer L. Stephen Holzhalb, III, D. Min. first proposed the idea of Christwood in 1989 when he served as the Rector of Christ Episcopal Church-in 2004, he returned to Christwood in his present role with the guidance of a 16-member volunteer Board of Directors and a senior management team.

What We Do

Christwood offers concierge living to more than 270 residents with access to resort-style amenities, convenient services, and easy access to quality healthcare. Situated on 117 acres in Covington, LA, Christwood is a not-for-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community.

In the Spring of 2021, the Board of Directors appointed a Master Plan Task Force to explore expansion opportunities for its 60 undeveloped acres. Under consideration is the possible addition of 80 new independent living apartment homes and cottages, new common space for community activities including indoor Pickle Ball courts, an ancillary clubhouse, bocce ball, croquet courts and a possible new health center, offering residences for those needing assisted living or skilled nursing. The Task force is consulting with Greenbrier Development and PRDG Architects to explore all facets of a possible expansion. A market feasibility study was recently conducted by ProMatura.

The community has a history of reinvesting in its campus. A significant remodel of the independent living corridors is currently underway. Three indoor pickleball courts are envisioned in the first phase of the Master Plan project to compliment the Community Center’s indoor heated pool and senior fitness offerings on campus.
