Cari Roy

With Hats As Amazing As Her Psychic Ability

A lover of hats with flowers rimming her face, a jazz singer and a professional psychic and medium, Cari Roy doesn’t read cards on folding table in Jackson Square. She operates from a handsome suite in a high-rise office building in the Central Business District next to attorneys, architects and venture capital firms. She sings jazz with a pleasant strong voice, and forget about finding her wearing gypsy garb you may expect from a street psychic; she dresses as stylish as a model and adds the finishing touch with one of her amazing hats every chance she gets.

“My style is feminine, fabulous, fun and a bit flirty,” she says with a smile as she sits down to talk about herself after walking away from the microphone where she has just been belting out a jazz song at the recent birthday party for Margarita Bergen at Galatoire’s Restaurant.

Today Cari is wearing a hat rimmed with colorful silk flowers and a fashionable dress.

“I remember visiting my grandparents who lived in New Orleans and seeing many of the women wearing big, bright and beautiful hats and I wanted to look like them when I grew up,” she says. “Flowers on hats are always in season in this wonderful city.”

How did a jazz singer who wears a great hat become a psychic and medium? “My mother was a psychic and a medium; and her father was an astrologer and numerologist,” she answers. “I believe that the development of my psychic abilities and creativity was fostered at a young age.” Her Temple University studies included philosophy, psychology, theology and cultural anthropology. “The human condition has always fascinated me.”

It is clear to Cari how she ended up practicing her profession in New Orleans. “Some of my early childhood busts of psychic awareness occurred here. I could sense the timelessness and mystic nature of the city even as a child and I never found a place that fits so well for who I am and what I do as New Orleans. The spirit of the city is enchanting and embracing and I am meant to be here. It is just in my blood.” Then she points out that New Orleans is the No. 1 paranormal destination in the country. “More people come here seeking to have some type of mystical experience that seems to be so very native to us. Here we are associated with vampires, ghosts, voodoo and glimpsing behind the veil of normal perception.”

Cari explains that there are no psychic schools or blueprints for starting the business of being a psychic and medium. “You have to make it happen on your own in this type of business.” And how does she describe what she does? “As a psychic, I look at the who, what and where of people’s lives and provide information about future evens; as a medium, I connect with the departed to bring understanding a solace to people still grieving.”

When you learn more about Cari it seems only normal that the Travel Channel called her the top psychic in New Orleans and the BBC Television Network in England named her the best psychic medium in the U.S. It should also be just part of the charm of New Orleans that she is a jazz singer and wears wonderful one-of-a-kind hats.

Where does she shop for her hats? “A couple of my favorite places to shop are Fleur de Paris on Royal Street and the Parlor on St. Claude,” Cari says. She also makes some of her own hats. “I am a Ninja with a glue gun,” she smiles and says. “It’s my tool of choice when hat making. New Orleans has the greatest art markets where you will find many talented milliners selling their creations.

“It is wonderful to live in a city where ladies wear hats. Beautiful hats are part of the enchantment of New Orleans.”
