Hospitality and tourism industry job fest looking to fill open positions

Anyone working in the hospitality and tourism industry is a hero. The cultural knowledge, patience and flexibility required are enough to garner kudos. When you consider the added layer of New Orleans-style hospitality to the job expectations… well, those folks are superheroes and we’re looking for more of them.

New Orleans & Company is hosting its monthly installment of its Hospitality and Tourism Industry Job Fest on Thursday, Nov. 15 at Delgado Community College’s Student Life Center from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., with a panel preceding it at 11 a.m. More than 20 companies are expected to participate to fill openings at hotels, restaurants and various tourism roles. The jobs range from entry level to managerial.

The job fests have been ongoing and began during New Orleans & Company’s former iteration as the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau. Now, however, there is a stronger focus and commitment to career-oriented job creation and being a partner to the New Orleans workforce.

“As New Orleans & Company, we are committed to our core mission of ensuring that we are a catalytic force for our industry and drive business growth for thousands of small business owners and significant business enterprises. But, we also have a new mission of connecting with the broader economy, partnering with government on finding solutions to move our city forward and improving the lives of all of our workforce and all residents in every neighborhood of our city,” said Stephen Perry, president and CEO of New Orleans & Company, in a press release.

The monthly job fests are part of their larger effort to benefit the city’s residents and the industry’s stakeholders to help provide a “path to prosperity” within the community. Other outreach projects include fostering workforce development initiatives and working with school-based programs.

According to New Orleans & Company, more than 100,000 employees are directly employed in the tourism industry in New Orleans. Tourism revenues generate 43 percent of the city’s operating budget though sales tax and property tax, and that figure does not include taxes paid by employees in the industry.

As an added educational opportunity at the November job fest, there will also be a panel discussion with industry experts. The panelists include Tabitha McCabe, talent and development senior director at Creole Cuisine, Keith Schmitt, director of human resources at the New Orleans Marriott and Toni Mobley, senior vice president chief service officer at the Audubon Nature Institute.

The job fest is designed to be a one-stop shop for job seekers. Candidates are encouraged to bring their current resumes, although that is not required. At the job fest, they will be able to meet one-on-one with potential employers to learn about each company’s hiring process and what role best suits their skill sets. More information can be found online.
