American Cancer Society Louisiana Area Executive Director Wins National Award

NEW ORLEANS – Kate Kelley, the executive director of the American Cancer Society South Region Louisiana Area, has been named one of 30 staff members across the nation to receive the organization’s first-ever CEO Club award. The group of high performers from six regions not only significantly exceeded their individual goals in 2018, but also demonstrated a commitment to living the American Cancer Society’s Core Values. Additional details were shared in a press release.

“Executive director Kate Kelley leads with diversity to ensure both staff and volunteers at all levels of the Society are represented,” said Robert Morris, vice president of Community Development for the American Cancer Society South Region. “She is always asking her team and others for feedback on how she can work to make things better. She demonstrates courage when facing challenges head on and is constantly pushing her team forward.”

Under Kelley’s leadership, the Louisiana Area based out of New Orleans was ranked #1 out of the Society’s 46 organizational areas in 2017, and #2 in 2018.

“In 2018, Kate exceeded her goal by hitting 112%, making her a clear candidate for the CEO Club,” Morris added. “She also encourages an inclusive, innovative working environment with a sharp focus on fundraising, which is why her team and community volunteer leaders found success in developing Shuck Cancer.”

The now annual Shuck Cancer fundraising event, which takes place near Superior Seafood & Oyster Bar on Napoleon Avenue, offers guests oyster and wine pairings, live entertainment, and a silent auction. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society's local Access to Care program for transportation grants to Greater New Orleans area health systems.

In its first year, the event raised more than $140,000, and it will continue to build upon that success in 2019. Funds raised from Shuck Cancer will help provide free transportation to cancer patients throughout the Greater New Orleans area thanks to paid transportation grants provided by the Society to local hospitals.

“Our success can be attributed to a real team effort,” said Kelley. “We have amazing staff, volunteers, and donors along with compelling fundraising events, including Relay For Life, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Real Men Wear Pink, Shuck Cancer, and our annual Belles & Beaus Ball that benefits the Patrick F. Taylor Hope Lodge on River Road, providing a free ‘home away from home’ for cancer patients traveling to New Orleans for treatment.”

“Every dollar raised at these events allows the American Cancer Society to continue leading the fight for a world without cancer. By supporting ACS, you are giving to local education, advocacy, research, and patient services.” Kelley added.

The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of 1.5 million volunteers dedicated to saving lives, celebrating lives, and leading the fight for a world without cancer. For more information, go to www.cancer.org/la.
