NOBA, JCC, Oscar J. Tomas Charitable Trust Launch New Community Dance Program To Empower People With Parkinson’s, Screen ‘Capturing Grace’

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Ballet Association (NOBA), in partnership with the New Orleans Jewish Community Center (JCC), kicks off its newest community dance program, Dance for Parkinson’s, sponsored by the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust, on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the JCC, 5342 St. Charles Ave., from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

The event will feature a screening of “Capturing Grace,” the award-winning documentary by director Dave Iverson, which follows the story of acclaimed dancers from Brooklyn’s world-renowned Mark Morris Dance Group working with people with Parkinson’s disease to develop the Mark Morris Dance Group’s Dance for PD program.

Dance for Parkinson’s is designed to empower people with Parkinson’s disease to explore movement and music in ways that are stimulating and creative, all in a safe and welcoming environment for participants and their friends, family and caregivers.

This will be the only program of its kind in Louisiana, reps said.

Following the film, attendees will have an opportunity to take a sample dance class.

         The schedule includes:

10:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. – Registration

10:45 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. – Program kick off

11:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. – Screening of “Capturing Grace”

11:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Sample class

Oscar Judah Tolmas, a lifelong resident of New Orleans, was a Veteran of WWII, attorney and real estate developer, but horses and horse racing were his passions. In his last will and testament, he formed the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust to support charitable organizations with their mission of helping others.

Light refreshments will be served at the Dance for Parkinson’s event.

There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.
