Second Harvest Recruiting Volunteers To Prepare Kids' Meals

NEW ORLEANS – Second Harvest’s Food Bank Community Kitchen, 700 Edwards Ave., is in urgent need of more volunteers to help prepare meals for children.

The Second Harvest Food Bank Kids Cafe program cooks and delivers thousands of hot meals to local after-school programs every week. However, due to dramatically increased demand for these meals, Second Harvest is in urgent need for many more volunteers to help prepare these meals, reps said.

“On our busiest days, our staff and volunteers prepare approximately 1,500 meals for local children, five days a week,” said Susan Goss, Second Harvest Community Kitchen director. “However, we are serving more children than ever, and we’re unfortunately very behind in the number of volunteers we need.”

Volunteers must be at least 15-years-old.

         Three volunteer shifts are available each day Monday through Thursday in the Second Harvest Community Kitchen from 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., and 12:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. A Friday volunteer shift is also available from 8:30 a.m. -11:00 a.m.

“We’re so fortunate to have the help of more than 8,000 volunteers who help our entire organization year round,” Goss said. “But we are in need of more than 70 more regular volunteers to make this important program happen.”
