Louisiana Flood Victims Seeking Homeowner Aid Warned Of Scam

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana's storm recovery office is warning victims of last year's floods about a telephone scam targeting people who have applied for homeowner aid.

The Office of Community Development says callers are asking flood-impacted families to turn over bank account numbers or to put up a financial deposit in order to complete their applications for assistance from the Restore Louisiana homeowner assistance program.

When calling applicants, Restore Louisiana staff confirm their identities by providing the applicant's survey account number. In addition, the recovery office says the Restore Louisiana program doesn't ask for any banking information or a social security number by phone.
