Children’s Hospital to partner with Tulane University School of Medicine

NEW ORLEANS — Children’s Hospital and Tulane University School of Medicine have signed an affiliation agreement to work together on clinical, academic and research activities in pediatrics.

The state’s only free-standing hospital focused entirely on the care of children will join forces with Tulane to increase access to high-quality pediatric health care and enhance pediatric educational and training opportunities for medical students and medical residents in Louisiana.

“As part of a research-intensive medical school, Tulane doctors are dedicated to delivering the highest-quality patient care and translating the latest medical advances into clinical practice to help patients,” said Dr. Lee Hamm, senior vice president and dean of Tulane University School of Medicine. “We are excited to join Children’s Hospital in delivering comprehensive, cutting-edge pediatric care and are looking forward to working together to train the next generation of doctors in the region.”

“This partnership with the Tulane University School of Medicine affirms that Children’s Hospital is the premier pediatric healthcare destination in our region,” said John R. Nickens IV, president and CEO of Children’s Hospital. “We are thrilled to welcome the well-known pediatric academic program at Tulane to an already vibrant academic community at Children’s.”

Through this agreement, early next year Tulane pediatric faculty, residents and medical students will begin seeing pediatric inpatients at Children’s Hospital’s Uptown campus and its network of satellite specialty clinics across the region. The parties will collaborate on growth opportunities to ensure that children across the state of Louisiana have access to high-quality pediatric healthcare services.

“Children’s Hospital, a founding member of our health system, has long shared Tulane’s mission of academic excellence,” said Greg Feirn, CEO of LCMC Health. “Through this collaboration, we are collectively providing the best possible training experience for the next generation of pediatricians, and strengthening our community, economy and health outcomes of our state in the process.”

“Families who take their children to Tulane pediatricians for outpatient clinic services in Metairie and other clinic locations will be able to continue to do so. They will be seen by the same Tulane University physicians and will receive the same level of quality care they have come to expect from Tulane Pediatrics,” said Dr. Samir El-Dahr, chair of pediatrics at Tulane University School of Medicine.

With more than $5 million annually in federally funded pediatric research, Tulane University School of Medicine is the largest pediatric research organization in the state. Collaborating with Children’s Hospital will give Tulane the opportunity to significantly expand clinical research in pediatrics, giving families greater access to the latest innovations in medicine.

Adding the Tulane University School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics to the already vibrant learning environment at Children’s Hospital through its partnership with LSU Health New Orleans affirms Children’s Hospital as the hub of pediatric academic activity in the state. Medical students and residents from both programs will benefit from an even more robust learning environment.
