Mayor Cantrell And State, Local Public Safety Leaders Discuss Hurricane Preparedness

NEW ORLEANS —  Two weeks before the start of hurricane season, Mayor LaToya Cantrell, joined by members of the Louisiana National Guard and local public safety leaders, discussed hurricane preparedness.  The meeting took place at Jackson Barracks.  Immediately following the meeting, a press conference was held. Mayor Cantrell stated her confidence in local, state, and federal partners working together. She also urged citizens to have their own hurricane plan in place.  "Evacuation is the best rescue," she said. The mayor was joined by Collin Arnold, Director of New Orleans Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP), Superintendent Michael Harrison of the New Orleans Police Department, Superintendent Tim McConnell of the New Orleans Fire Department and New Orleans EMS Director Dr. Emily Nichols among others.

"Today we reviewed our plans and reaffirmed our partnership in response, should a hurricane come our way," said Arnold. "The National Guard is there to support us in three main hurricane response functions, if necessary, including evacuation, supply distribution, and security. While we hope these things to be unnecessary, we know we’re prepared for whatever comes our way. Ready.nola.gov is our hub for emergency preparedness and response."

"I cannot overstate how important it is to make the most of opportunities to work through our All-Hazards Emergency Response Plan.  A key ingredient in any successful response is preparedness.  Louisiana's Emergency Response Plan is integrated throughout the state, from city to city, from parish to parish and relies on the coordinated efforts of many agencies and organizations.  Any opportunity to discuss our plan is time well spent," said Major General Glenn H. Curtis of Louisiana National Guard.
