Tulane Launches Online Master's For Homeland Security

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University’s School of Continuing Studies is now offering a new online program for a Master of Professional Studies (MPS) degree in Homeland Security. The new program will consist of 10 courses covering topics such as terrorism, critical thinking and intelligence, cyber threats, infrastructure protection and emergency management. The program’s core courses will be offered during the Fall 2016 Semester. Enrollment is now open for the new MPS program, and the registration deadline is Friday, August 26, 2016.

The four core classes, Health and Medical Issues in Emergency Management; Intelligence Research, Method and Analysis; Homeland Security and Approaches to Counter-Terrorism; and Emergency Management, form the building blocks for the overall online MPS program.

Health and Medical Issues in Emergency Management is an advanced study of crucial health and medical issues regarding biological, radiological and nuclear events involved in crises and emergencies encountered by non-medical emergency managers. Intelligence Research, Method and Analysis will examine the collaborative process of intelligence analysis and provide tools and concepts to develop leaders who will understand how to use and gather information when making tactical decisions. This course will also give students a fundamental understanding of intelligence gathering and analysis pertaining to money laundering, risk management and assessment and operational concepts.

Another core class being offered this fall is Homeland Security and Approaches to Counter-Terrorism, which examines key policy issues that must be addressed in strategic counter-terrorism planning. This course will explore domestic terrorist threats and how to counter the threats by utilizing science and technology. Emergency Management will explore modern emergency management concepts, national and international trends and technological applications to emergency management. The class will use case studies to determine the effectiveness of planning, responding and recovering from natural and technological disasters.

“Tulane is the only university in the region to offer an online MPS that covers both Homeland Security and Emergency Management,” Michael Wallace, Tulane’s Director of Homeland Security Studies, said. “All of our professors are esteemed experts in their fields, and they also have experience teaching online classes. The MPS program is perfect for anyone seeking to advance in the homeland security, law enforcement, disaster preparation and response or emergency management fields or to pursue a career in these fields. The Tulane online MPS program is also very affordable, especially when compared to other national programs.”

After successful completion of the four core classes, students must take six elective homeland security and emergency management graduate courses to complete their degree. Applicants for the MPS program must submit an application, which includes a brief description of how a graduate education from Tulane can assist in achieving personal objectives, and students must also submit official college transcripts. Interested students holding a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university should visit the school’s website.

Tulane’s School of Continuing Studies offers competitive tuition rates. Tulane also offers special discounts to the nation’s military veterans and is ranked a top-rated university by U.S. News for serving the needs of veterans.

According to U.S. News and World Report, Tulane University is among the top national universities in the United States, ranked 41st among the best national universities and in the top 26 for its service learning programs. As with all degrees from Tulane, a degree from the School of Continuing Studies enjoys a national and international reputation that will continue to grow in value and prestige.
