Son to Follow in Father's Footsteps with Launch of New Boat

NEW ORLEANS— The New Orleans Steamboat Company (NOSC) announced in a press release that Matthew Dow is now serving as assistant marine operations manager/project manager of the renovation of the Riverboat CITY OF NEW ORLEANS, sister boat to the NATCHEZ.

Dow’s father, Bill Dow, and grandfather, Wilbur Dow, started the NOSC in 1974 and operated it in addition to Lake George Steamboat Company, which they already owned in New York. Dow, a native New Orleanian, moved back to the city after working for both companies.

Dow attended Maine Maritime Academy where he majored in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in small vessel operations and international business and logistics, graduating second in his class. Prior to his move to New Orleans, he worked for the Lake George Steamboat Company for about 16 years in different departments and positions.

During his summers and holidays, Dow worked on the NATCHEZ, where he learned the ins and outs of steamboat operation by gaining experience as a deckhand and a pilot. He obtained his master’s license in 2012. He now spends the majority of his time overseeing the renovation of the new boat, which should be ready this spring.

“Matt has shown exceptional growth through the years and is extremely knowledgeable of how we operate,” says captain William Wilson, marine operations manager. “His passion for the company and responsible work ethic is carrying us through the renovation with ease and we can’t wait to set sail.”

The NATCHEZ sails three times daily and hosts private events and weddings. It offers Creole cuisine and beverages, live jazz music and narration, visits to the steam engine room, and calliope concerts. Her sister boat, the Riverboat CITY OF NEW ORLEANS, will offer daily brunch cruises, an optional stop for a tour of Mardi Gras World, and a nightly dinner jazz cruise. It will also be available for private deck parties and whole boat charters.
