Mayor Landrieu Issues Statement On National Service Recognition Day

NEW ORLEANS — Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued the following statement in honor of the National Service Recognition Day.

“In honor of the National Service Recognition Day, we remember the life of Joseph Massenburg, the 18-year old AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps member who was killed while serving in New Orleans in 2013. While he is not with us, his legacy lives on as individuals follow in his footsteps and work together to change our community.

“Today, we also salute the countless volunteers who continue to give their time, energy and services to make New Orleans better and stronger. The progress of New Orleans wouldn't be as robust or impactful without the hard work and dedication of our committed volunteers. I am forever grateful for the role our service organizations plays every day to help us create the city of our dreams.

“As we approach our 300th anniversary, I am particularly thankful for the organizations participating in the City’s Tricentennial Volunteer Challenge, 300,000 for the Next 300. This challenge honors the work of civil rights activists including Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Keller and Edith Stern and encourages residents to make improvements to schools and community spaces and buildings. Organizations interested in joining this challenge are encouraged to visit 2018nola.com/300000-for-300/ to sign up.

“Specifically, I would like to recognize four outstanding organizations including Xavier University of Louisiana, City Year New Orleans, Archbishop Rummel High School, and University of New Orleans Classic Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math and Science Programs that combined have had a total of 650 volunteers contribute 1950 hours to our Challenge.

“As I reflect on the last eight years as your Mayor, one thing I have always been able to count on is the strength and commitment of our non-profit and service community. Together, we have shown the world what is possible through giving back. Thank you for your service.”
