The Carrollton Courthouse, 719 Carrollton Ave.

NEW ORLEANS – The Carrollton Courthouse, 719 Carrollton Ave., was sold for $4.7 million at auction yesterday, Thursday, March 23, to Colonial Oaks Senior Living CEO Carl Mittendorff, Robert Morris with the Uptown Messenger reports.

Morris reports the Houston-based developer of senior living communities placed the winning bid at the Orleans Parish School Board headquarters on the Westbank. The building was owned by the Orleans Parish School Board and housed several schools including John McDonogh No. 23, Benjamin Franklin High School, Lusher Middle School and the Audubon Charter School.

Morris reports the building, an historic courthouse in the Carrollton neighborhood built in 1855, was abandoned because of weather related damage and deferred maintenance.

According to Morris, Mittendorff said his company was prepared to shoulder the costs of an historic renovation and that his company was looking for a location in New Orleans for three years.

Morris reports the second highest bidder was New Orleans-based developer Bernard Fromherz, with a bid of $4.6 million.
