2nd Annual Big Top Cake Competition To Showcase Local Cake Decorating Techniques At SoFAB

NEW ORLEANS – In partnership with John E. Koerner & Co., Inc. and Delgado University, the Southern Food & Beverage Museum (SoFAB) will host the second annual Big Top Cake Competition – a one-of-a-kind competition where professionals, home bakers and students showcase their finest cake decorating techniques to a panel of professional judges and the public.

         The Big Top Cake Competition will take place on Saturday, June 24, at SoFAB, 1504 Oretha C. Haley Blvd., from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

         This year the theme is “It’s Happy Hour Somewhere!” and the winners of both the student and professional entries will have their cakes on display at the museum for a year following the competition. The student category winner will also receive admission to the three-day Pastry Live in Atlanta. Other prizes will be announced for the People’s Choice and the Bakery Carnival winners.

         In addition to the cake competition, the museum will host bakeries, chefs, and home cooks in the Bakery Carnival where museum guests can sample an array of sweet and savory creations.

10:00 a.m. – Professional judges will begin reviewing entries (museum closed).

11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Museum opens and public voting begins for the People’s Choice awards the Cake Competition and Bakery Carnival.

11:00 a.m. – Angela Wilson, pastry instructor at Delgado Community College, will lead a demonstration entitled “Anyone Can Decorate a Cake” – an informative session providing techniques and tips for the home baker.

12:30 p.m. – Chef Cesar Barachina, executive pastry chef at Pearl River Resort in Mississippi, will lead a “Cocktails to Dessert” demonstration, showing how favorite drinks can be reimagined into delicious desserts.

2:00 p.m. – Winners are announced.

3:00 p.m. – Bakery Entrepreneurship Panel Discussion exploring ways to start a bakery, legalities of selling products and more.

 

         Attendance to all events of the day is free with museum admission ($10.50 for adults, $5.25 for students, seniors and military).
