Orleans Parish School Board Member Ashley Launches New Scholarship For Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. District 2 Students

NEW ORLEANS – School Board member Ethan Ashley has created a new scholarship with the New Orleans Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. for public school students who have attended a New Orleans Public School throughout their high school career and who reside in District 2.

The scholarship application has no formal academic qualifications. Students may apply if they are enrolled to attend either a two or four-year college or university in the Fall of 2017. The scholarship will be awarded to a young leader in the community who is creating a legacy of educational and community excellence. Thus, this scholarship has been coined the "Legacy Scholarship."

School Board member Ashley believes “[a]s a school board member it is extremely important for me to support the success of our students. I was a public school student and was fortunate to receive several scholarships to attend Howard University. I was able to leave college without student loan debt due to scholarships, which is my goal for the students of District 2.”

Ashley said he was inspired to create this scholarship due to the financial aid cuts to higher education and the overwhelming burden on students and their families to pay for steady increasing cost of college tuition. “Local scholarships like this Legacy Scholarship can make the difference in our young people's ability to attend and finish college,” he said.

Polemarch of the New Orleans Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Treyton Diggs said, “the brothers of New Orleans Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. believe in supporting our youth through college by providing them with scholarships. This Legacy Scholarship is just one of the many scholarships that we support and provide on behalf of our youth in this community.”

The immediate past Polemarch of the New Orleans Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and Orleans Parish School Board President John Brown said, “the Legacy Scholarship is directly aligned with our mission as a fraternity and we were honored to partner with our brother and School Board Member Ethan Ashley to make this scholarship possible.”
