Mayor Landrieu Breaks Ground On Gert Town Natatorium

NEW ORLEANS – On Friday, Mayor Landrieu joined city and state officials and community stakeholders to break ground on the new Gert Town Natatorium, 3411 Broadway St.

The Natatorium will be the fourth indoor pool in New Orleans and house a six-lane, 25-yard indoor competition swimming pool and share a community plaza with the neighboring Second District Police Station. The facility will also have men’s, women’s and a family locker room area as well as a snack bar. The new 15,000-square feet facility will cost $6.7 million to construct.

“Community pools are critical to keeping our kids off the streets and providing them a place to come together,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “We’re excited to break ground on the Natatorium and return this pool to the Gert Town neighborhood. With each project like this, we remake our city the way she was always meant to be. Since 2010, we have made unprecedented investments into the neighborhoods of New Orleans—and there is much more to come."

Vic Richard, CEO of NORDC, said, “We are proud to bring this premier aquatics facility to the Gert Town community. As a regional anchor, the Gert Town Natatorium will continue to fulfill our commitment to improve the physical, mental, and social well-being of all New Orleanians.”

Upon completion, the Gert Town Natatorium will be the fourth indoor pool and the City’s 16th NORDC pool in operation. The original Gert Town Natatorium was substantially damaged during Hurricane Katrina and was demolished in 2011 to prepare the site for the new facility.

Sewerage & Water Board Executive Director Cedric Grant said, “The new natatorium will be a great addition the Gert Town neighborhood and have a positive impact on the community. This swimming pool will be one of 16 NORDC operates and will provide enriching recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.”

District B Councilmember LaToya Cantrell said, “I am very excited to see the beginning of construction at the natatorium. Gert Town deserves quality community institutions, and this ground breaking is the culmination of the hard work required to get this done.”

Since Mayor Landrieu took office in 2010, the City has invested more than $157 million in new and improved NORDC facilities and nearly tripled its programming budget, City reps said. Just last year, NORDC opened three new recreation centers and one new swimming pool, bringing the total number of recreation centers, parks and playgrounds to 35. In 2016, more than 70,000 youth participated in NORDC programming and since 2010, NORDC has provided jobs to nearly 10,000 New Orleans youth.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Louisiana Recovery Office Director Mike Womack said, ”FEMA recognizes the value of community. This modern and improved aquatic facility will restore lost recreational services and will benefit not only Gert Town residents but the community as a whole.”
