Nunez Community College Hosts Presentation About Workforce Development

CHALMETTE, La. – Dr. Tina Tinney, chancellor of Nunez Community College, welcomed Louisiana's Technical & Community College System president, Dr. Monty Sullivan, to campus on Tuesday, Feb. 19, as part of a statewide advocacy tour highlighting the important role Nunez and the other 11 community colleges in Louisiana plays in workforce development and education. Details were shared in a press release.

In Tinney's opening remarks, she stated that "Nunez's mission is to provide relevant and innovative training and education in an effort to prepare our students not only for jobs of tomorrow, but also for the jobs that don’t yet exist." 

Before an audience of the area's state legislative delegation, St. Bernard Parish officials, community partners and the Nunez Foundation Board, Sullivan's presentation focused on transfer opportunities for students, workforce development, college and career readiness, adult education and open admissions.

"Last year, Louisiana's community and technical colleges served and provided instruction to over 158,000 students, transferred over 14,000 students to four-year institutions across the country, and graduated 23,684 students," said Sullivan. "Our colleges have earned a national reputation as colleges of excellence and as shining examples of efficiency and productivity."

Legislative delegates in attendance included included senator Sharon Hewitt (District 1), representative Ray Garofalo, Jr. (District 103), representative Walt Leger (District 91), and senator JP Morrell (District 3). 

"Dr. Monty Sullivan and Dr. Tina Tinney made a compelling case for why investing in our workforce is a smart investment for our state," said senator Hewitt.

During the presentation, Tinney also awarded the Nunez Community College Industry Partner of the Year award to Chalmette Refining PBF.

"In order for us to remain relevant, it is imperative that we build, expand and enhance our community, business and industry partnerships. Nunez is fortunate to have many incredible partners that contribute to helping us meet our mission," said Tinney. "Chalmette Refining PBF has been a legacy partner to Nunez with consistent support of a multitude of resources that include both financial capital and human capital in support of our process technology (PTEC) program through resources and curriculum development."

Elizabeth Ellison Frost, PBF Community Liaison, accepted the award.
