• Thanks to an extraordinary gift by Tom and Gayle Benson, the Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center will double in space to include 100,000 square feet of expanded oncology clinics across five floors with more than 50 personalized and semi-private patient chemo infusion stations. The new space will also include a clinical cancer research program with a comprehensive range of clinical studies for all cancer types; including cutting edge drugs and anti-cancer agents.

• To accommodate this growth, the existing parking garage will be expanded to an additional 300 parking spaces.

On the “North Campus”, directly across the street from the hospital, a new imaging center will offer comprehensive imaging services including CT Scans, Mammography, three additional MRI machines and more. The proximity of this new facility near the Center for Primary Care & Wellness will enable services to expand and allow for easier access for patients and physicians.  Close proximity to support services and associated resources, including a pharmacy and lab, will also be a benefit.

The newly, created “West Campus” includes the Jefferson Plaza Shopping Center totaling 8 acres and will include:

• The Ochsner Rehabilitation Hospital, a new acute inpatient rehabilitation facility in partnership with Select Medical Corporation – a national leader in inpatient rehabilitation. The space will double inpatient rehabilitation beds from 28 to 60 as well as add 15 pediatric specialty inpatient rehabilitation beds. The new hospital is expected to employ 180 therapists, nurses and other specialists. It will serve as a regional destination for the most acute conditions such as spinal cord injuries spinal cord and brain injuries, stroke, amputation, neurological disorders and orthopedic conditions.

•  The Ochsner Outpatient Physical and Occupational Therapy Clinic will provide much needed services to the community. We will also partner with others to offer retail options, a variety of short and long-term housing, and an additional parking garage as we grow.

Additionally, the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO) integrated Ochsner into their Jefferson EDGE 2020 economic development plan, which serves as a roadmap for economic success in the redevelopment of the Jefferson Plaza Shopping Center. JEDCO connected Ochsner to the Urban Land Institute, which jump started the creation of a Technical Assistance Panel (TAP) to study the best possible use for the Jefferson Highway corridor.

“Participating in the TAP process was an opportunity to incorporate Ochsner’s vision into the vision of the Jefferson EDGE in a way that better serves the community,” said Jerry Bologna, Executive Director, JEDCO. “This along with the creation of a façade improvement program are just a few ways that we are looking to improve the area for the benefit of the local businesses and the neighborhoods along Jefferson Highway.”

Ochsner reps said during the construction phase, these new projects will bring 284 new jobs, will increase household earnings for parish residents as a result of those jobs by $135 million dollars and will generate more than $610 million in new sales to local businesses in Jefferson Parish.

“The work to build out a healthcare corridor along Jefferson Highway will have a significant economic impact on Jefferson Parish for many years,” said Councilman Paul Johnston.

Over a 10-year period, the developments will have an economic impact across the state with a total increase of nearly 2,500 jobs in areas such as utilities, transportation and warehousing, manufacturing, wholesale trade and real estate, rental and leasing through both the construction and operational phases, Ochsner reps said. It is anticipated that this will generate nearly $1.3 billion in new sales to businesses statewide.

"Patients choose Ochsner for the peace of mind that comes with receiving care at one of the nation’s leading healthcare destinations,” said Don Pierson, LED Secretary. “As a state, we support the growth of healthcare organizations like Ochsner that expand our reach and our quality of life at the same time. We are proud to acknowledge Ochsner and its continued commitment to best-in-class healthcare services that help Louisiana attract and keep strong businesses and talent.”
