Nunez Community College Fights Hunger with Pelican Pantry

NEW ORLEANS - Nunez Community College opened its doors to the Pelican Pantry during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Dec. 4, 2018. Participating in the grand opening were Dr. Tina Tinney, Nunez Community College chancellor;  Dr. Kim Hunter-Reed, Louisiana Commissioner of Higher Education; Kim Nunez, community supporter; Becky Maillet, Nunez Community College vice chancellor of Student Affairs; and Jacinta Massey, Nunez Community College counselor/ADA coordinator. Details were shared in a press release.

Pelican Pantry plays a vital role in helping fight hunger among the students and families the college serves in the community. In a 2017 study that surveyed 43,000 students, the Wisconsin Hope Lab found that 36-percent of university students and 42-percent of community college students were affected by food insecurity.

The Pelican Pantry is available to all current students, faculty and staff of the college.

Anyone interested in making a donation to the pantry can drop off unexpired non-perishable items to the Student Affairs office, located in the administration building of the college at 3710 Paris Road, or by contacting Jacinta Massey at 504-278-6435.
