LA’s Tallest Skyscraper One Shell Square To Be Renamed Hancock Whitney Center
One Shell Square will soon become the Hancock Whitney Center at 701 Poydras St.
NEW ORLEANS – One Shell Square, at 701 Poydras St., is the tallest building in Louisiana and the first skyscraper built in the New Orleans Central Business District. Building reps said it stands as an icon of 20th century engineering while providing unsurpassed 21st century Class-A office space and amenities.
It will soon be renamed the Hancock Whitney Center when Whitney Bank moves its operations from 228 St. Charles Ave. to the 51-floor building.
The New Orleans Advocate’s Richard Thompson reports Whitney's Mississippi-based parent, Hancock Holding Co., signed a long-term lease, which starts next year, and includes naming rights for the office tower.
Whitney Bank reps said this is a permanent move from its current St. Charles Avenue headquarters that was occupied for more than 100 years.
Thompson reports the bank’s 400 employees will now occupy up to nine floors at the Hertz Investment Group-owned building and will enjoy more space and modern facilities.
One Shell Square was built in 1972 by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill for Shell Oil Co., and will continue to house more than 1,400 workers and contractors on 18 floors at the building, Thompson reports.
