COX to Honor Inspirational Student Heroes

NEW ORLEANS – Young people who have defied the odds and overcome academic and life challenges will be honored tomorrow, Tuesday, April 16, at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner during the annual Cox Inspirational Student Heroes awards program which begins at 4 p.m.

Details were shared in a press release.

“We are so excited to be celebrating 27 years of honoring our area’s unsung student heroes, who come from many different walks of life,” says Kevin Monroe, vice president and market leader for Cox’s New Orleans market. “These are students who could complain about their circumstances but choose to smile and have a positive attitude instead. We look forward to honoring them and giving them the recognition they deserve.”

Since its inception, the Cox Inspirational Heroes Program has recognized more than 3,000 incredible students in the New Orleans area who have demonstrated overwhelming achievements despite their physical, emotional, psychological, educational or social challenges faced daily.

Each year, public, private, and parochial schools in the parishes of Jefferson, Orleans, St. Bernard and St. Charles are asked to nominate one student hero from within their school. The children will be accompanied by their parents or guardians, teachers, and school administrators. Local superintendents who have confirmed that they will be in attendance include:

  • Dr. Shayla Guidry-Hilaire, Executive Director, The Exceptional Children’s Services Leadership Team for the Orleans Parish Public School System
  • Dr. Cade Brumley, superintendent, Jefferson Parish Schools
  • Stevie Crovetto, Director of Public Information, St. Charles Parish Schools
  • Cheramie Kerth, Special Education Supervisor, St. Bernard Parish Schools
  • Dr. RaeNell Houston, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Archdiocese of New Orleans

“There are many common threads woven through our heroes’ young lives. They help others and are described as brave, remarkable, hardworking, caring and, of course, as inspiring to others,” Monroe said. “Although our event recognizes these amazing students, it also pays tribute to their teachers, school administrators, parents and guardians, who have helped shape their lives by offering them words of encouragement and praise.”

A short bio will be read aloud for each hero as he or she is honored on stage. Each student will receive a certificate of achievement and a small gift.
