Woman-Owned STEM Businesses Represent Louisiana In National Competition

RENO, Nv. ─ Two woman-owned STEM businesses in Louisiana are being recognized this week as winners of The 2018 American Small Business Championship. Technology & Learning Center-Mandeville and Model Content were awarded an all-expense-paid trip to this week’s training and networking event, SCORE mentoring and publicity throughout the year, and a chance to win one of three $15,000 grand prizes.

Mandeville’s The Technology & Learning Center promotes student success through a unique twist on tutoring, as well as teaches fun, hands-on STEM classes to kids via CODE, robotics, science, and more. Lifetime Louisiana-certified master teacher and owner Wendy Thompson opened the center’s doors five years ago with a dream of making a positive difference in the lives of students through excellent study habits and by providing a strong foundation of technology-rich programs to promote STEM education for young children.

“We are so honored and grateful to receive this recognition for our small business. Thank you to our parents, students, and a wonderful community both locally and online for supporting us and helping us succeed. This would not have been possible without you,” says Wendy.

New Orleans’ Model Content is a communications firm with a mission of advancing Louisiana’s science and tech sectors and compensating creative professionals for the full value of their work. Molly Kramer started the business after a family member’s health issues made her full-time communications job untenable. Now in the second year of operations, Model Content is helping startups, healthcare providers, and other complex businesses grow their customer base by telling an engaging story.

“It means so much for this award to come from SCORE, considering the transformative role it plays in people's lives. Starting your own business is a bold and risky move, and SCORE helps you do it right.” says Molly, who oversees the firms’ work specializing in science, healthcare, tech, and policy.

Model Content and Technology & Learning Center-Mandeville are also eligible to win one of three additional $15,000 grand prizes by being named Grand Champion. A judging panel of small business experts will select three Grand Champions from the group of small business champions this summer. Selection will be based on how effectively Champions utilize their prizes to grow business revenue or operations, as well as how effectively the winners promoted the Championship in the media and social media.
