The American Planning Association's National Planning Conference Convenes in New Orleans, April 21-24
NEW ORLEANS — The American Planning Association (APA) will welcome more than 6,000 planning professionals from 23 different countries to the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center for the APA National Planning Conference, April 21-24. Students of the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Louisiana will be invited to participate and learn about the urban planning profession in a collaborative workshop featuring non-profit, Youth Engagement Planning (YEP!), Monday, April 23.
Attendees will join with neighborhood residents and stakeholders for a Community Planning Workshop focused on the Claiborne Corridor – a section spanning the length of Claiborne Ave. that runs through the heart of New Orleans, and includes the nation’s oldest African American commercial districts. The program aims to serve communities facing limited resources by helping them address planning issues such as social equity and affordability, economic development, sustainability and urban design among others. In 2005, related efforts provided support for New Orleans, Slidell, Mandeville, LA as well as Henderson Point, MS.
APA provides leadership in the development of vital communities by advocating excellence in planning, promoting education and citizen empowerment, and providing members with the tools and support necessary to meet the challenges of growth and change.
The 2018 APA National Planning Conference marks the third time the organization has met in New Orleans. The conference was last held in the city in 2010. This year, the projected economic impact is estimated to be nearly $6.5 million.
