Mayor Landrieu, City Officials Launch Algiers Courthouse Renovations

NEW ORLEANS—Yesterday, Wednesday, April 19, Mayor Mitch Landrieu joined City Officials to launch the renovations of the Historic Algiers Courthouse, 225 Morgan St. The courthouse was originally constructed in 1896 and serves as the home of the Second City Court. Nearly $1.2 million in renovations is scheduled to be complete by the fall of 2017.

         “The Historic Algiers Courthouse has been a pillar of the Algiers neighborhood for over a century,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “These renovations will ensure that the courthouse continues to serve as a vital asset to both this community and New Orleans as a whole.”

         The Historic Algiers Courthouse renovations include installation of a new slate roof, new ornamental metal signage, repairs and replacement of wood decking in the east and west tower upper floors and miscellaneous repairs to the building exterior.

         District C Councilmember Nadine Ramsey said, “The Algiers Courthouse is one of the most important landmarks in the city. It is the third-oldest courthouse in continuous use in the State of Louisiana. I appreciate all the support of the Friends of the Courthouse and the Mayor’s office to get these much needed repairs done.”

         Sewerage and Water Board Executive Director Cedric Grant said, “The Algiers Courthouse renovations will not only improve the aesthetics of the courthouse, but also serve to strengthen the building itself. The federal dollars used to perform these renovations are a wise investment in our city’s future.”

         District 7 State Senator Troy Carter said, "The Old Algiers Courthouse is a jewel in our beloved Algiers. Time and normal wear and tear has challenged this historic structure, but now through our collective efforts it will get the repairs needed to ensure her preservation.”

         District 102 State Representative Gary Carter said, "The Algiers Courthouse is a New Orleans treasure, and I am glad these renovations are taking place. I am also pleased that this project demonstrates the results of teamwork and cooperation between the residents of Algiers, the Friends of the Algiers Courthouse, the City of New Orleans, the State Legislature and FEMA. Together we can accomplish many great things."

         Funding for the Algiers Courthouse renovation came from FEMA public assistance, city reps said. The Architect of Record is Linfield, Hunter, and Junius, Inc. and Dynamic Construction, LLC. is the General Contractor.

         FEMA Louisiana Recovery Office Director Mike Womack said, “We are happy to be a part of preserving the historical integrity of the Algiers Courthouse. Renovations to this historic building will ensure it remains a prominent landmark in this community.”
