LSU Health New Orleans’ Dr. Gee Receives 2 National Policy Appointments

NEW ORLEANS – Dr. Rebekah Gee, Assistant Professor of Health Policy and Management and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the LSU Health New Orleans Schools of Public Health and Medicine, has been elected to two key national positions.

         Dr. Gee, who also serves as Medicaid Medical Director for the State of Louisiana, is now a member of the Health System Performance & Public Health Steering Committee of the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP). According to NASHP, this committee is responsible for issues related to how health care services are delivered and how community health is promoted. Areas of expertise include public health, preventive health, health disparities, care and disease management, health care workforce, quality, and medical errors. NASHP is an independent academy of state health policymakers who are dedicated to helping states achieve excellence in health policy and practice. A non-profit, non-partisan organization, NASHP works collaboratively with state and federal officials, providers, researchers and consumers to develop and implement new approaches and policies to achieve quality, affordable, health care and advance a culture of health across states.

         Dr. Gee has also been elected to the National Committee for Quality Assurance’s (NCQA) Committee on Performance Measurement. According to NCQA, the Committee on Performance Measurement advises the NCQA Board of Directors on performance measures proposed for use in NCQA programs. The Committee is charged with evaluating measures against the appropriate measure criteria. The Committee not only has oversight for review and approval of measures that are used in NCQA's evaluation programs, but will also advise on other performance measurement activities as needed. The NCQA is a private, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. Since its founding in 1990, NCQA has been a central figure in driving improvement throughout the health care system, helping to elevate the issue of health care quality to the top of the national agenda. The NCQA seal is a widely recognized symbol of quality.

         Dr. Gee is a nationally recognized expert on quality improvement and Medicaid policy and maternal and child health. She serves in a leadership capacity on many national committees including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Health Resources and Services Administration of the US Department of Health and Human Services and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. Gee is the health policy resident expert for the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology and serves on the Institute of Medicine’s Board of Health Care Services.

         She is the recipient of the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs 2012 State Leadership in Maternal and Child Health Award for her work on improving birth outcomes. In 2014, Dr. Gee received the Woman of the Year Award from New Orleans City Business, was recognized as a “40 under 40” Leader for New Orleans, a Louisiana “Healthcare Hero” and received the American Medical Student Association’s “Women in Leadership” award. Dr. Gee is clinically active and is caring for patients at LSU Health. She lives in New Orleans and is the mother of five energetic children.
